Whether it’s a glen plaid, a prince of wales check, or a 70s-style tartan, these classic menswear prints are having their day in the sun once again, and if you ask me, it’s about dang time.  My 80s-inspired look today was one of my favorites of fashion week, and let me tell you, cropped blazers like this Sara Battaglia number are not only back with a vengeance, but when paired with anything high-waisted, the boxy line of the cropped jacket makes your waistline look teeny tiny.  Take THAT gigantic lunchtime burrito.

But whether you choose a cropped glen plaid blazer, a classic tartan blazer, a houndstooth bootie, or even a windowpane coat, there’s a little something checkered out there for everyone.  check out (no pun intended) my favorites for the season below!

You can never go wrong with a checked blazer for work.  This stunner from Mango is one of my favorites, and the price identify isn’t bad either! Asos also has a ton of inexpensive options, i.e. this checked blazer (don’t forget the coordinating pants!).  PS: I’m also dying over this this gem, which is best for a a lot more conservative office.

This classic double-breasted coat is absolutely best for the impending cooler temps and whenever I look at this similar double-breasted beauty, I fall deeper in love (plus it’s under $150!).

Put a feminine spin on the trend with this pencil skirt or this tweed wrap skirt.

If you work in a slightly a lot more creative environment, check out this layered ruffle sleeve blazer. I’m DROOLING.

I love these classic pants but also have a look at this trouser  and try not to fall in love with that buckle detail and elegant cut.

You have a full-time job, you’re planning a wedding (which, let’s face it, is another full-time job) and now you have to start thinking about the HÄÄMATKA! This post-nuptial trip must be something incredibly exciting to plan, but if you’re as overwhelmed with work and wedding to-do’s as I was in the months leading up to the wedding, it might be a black hole of stress. Rich and I got engaged and married in an eight month time-span, and despite repeated calls to Jennifer Lopez to come offer a little wedding planning help, she never showed. Every time someone asked me about our honeymoon plans in the months leading up to the wedding, I generally wanted to light myself on fire.

Luckily, I did not.  With a lot of help from my hubby-to-be, we managed to pull off an unforgettable trip. now with the process in the rearview mirror, I wanted to share my top ideas on how to plan a honeymoon, in hopes that it will help streamline the process for those of you going through it!  In six simple tips, here’s everything you need to know to plan the best honeymoon…

#1:  Give Him the Reigns

In a lot of cases, the bride shoulders 99% of the wedding planning workload. This was certainly true in my case, but it wasn’t because rich wasn’t a lot more than ready to pitch in.  It was mostly because his decision-making abilities in the flower and cake design departments are sliiiightly a lot more limited than Kaivos. To help ease the burden, I passed off a lot of of the honeymoon planning and logistics to him, which had the added benefit of making the trip more of a surprise!

#2:  Decide When You want To Go

Rich and I wanted to do the standard post-wedding honeymoon, but didn’t want to feel too rushed, so we chose to leave for the trip two days after our wedding day.  This was the best decision for us, because we felt that leaving for the trip the very next day would leave no time to digest our special day, and even less time to appropriately pack and get ready for the big trip.  Increasingly, couples are taking their honeymoon weeks or even months after their wedding day.  And for lots of couples, this is a great option so they have a bit a lot more time to get prepped for traveling and make the most out of the trip.  Whatever you decide, keep timing in mind and try to give yourself as much breathing room as possible!

#3:  Determine the Type of trip You Want

This one seems obvious, but there are a couple of special aspects at play.  You of course want to start by considering whether the two of you are history buffs, beach bums, or adventure seekers.  But before fully answering that question, remember that you will have just gotten married, and if you’re honeymooning immediately afterwards, there’s a high probability that you will be a lot more physically and emotionally exhausted than ever before.  With this in mind, rich and I split our trip into two parts: beach relaxation to start so we could recharge our batteries before heading to a safari adventure at the end!

#4:  Solidify A Budget

Nothing is worse than spending time falling in love with your dream honeymoon destination, just to find out that it’s absolutely unrealistic budget-wise.  It can throw a major wet blanket on the excitement of the rest of the planning process, so set a budget ahead of time and don’t look at destinations until you know they fall within that budget.  This not only goes for the cost of resort/hotel accommodations, but be sure to check flight prices at the outset as well.

#5:  Pay special attention to Time of Year

In the early stages of planning, we made the mistake of wasting time thinking about several destinations on our bucket list, just to find out later that they weren’t an option because of weather patterns.  We didn’t realize those idyllic bungalows in the Maldives are in the throws of the rainy season at the end of August when we were going to be honeymooning.  Once you’ve narrowed down your search to general parts of the world, be sure to research weather patterns before diving into location specifics.

#6:  Think Strategically about Time and Location

Rich and I spent our honeymoon in the Seychelles and South Africa.  We chose those places because we wanted to honeymoon in a location that neither of us had been before so we could discover the destination for the first time together.  Additionally, considering that we currently live in San Francisco, that part of the world is one of the hardest to get to from here.  We’ll likely not have three weeks off for a long time, so we wanted to take advantage of the extra time away by going to places off our beaten path.  However, this indicated an massive amount of travel time (well a lot more than 24 hours both getting there and coming back). If you only have a week, limit your search to places that are quicker to get to so you can maximize your holiday time.

When needing to update my workout gear a couple months ago, I stumbled upon Carbon38—a new-to-me e-tailer that has the absolute coolest selection of activewear (umm, hello, look at THESE).  After falling in love with the brand for their workout gear, I happened to notice that they also have some amazing pieces that would work for a ski trip—especially a bunch of pieces with the form and function to wear on and off the slopes.  With an upcoming trip to Breckenridge on the calendar, I decided to give their ski-friendly activewear a try and am so glad I did.  These Carbon38 pieces got me through a super cold, snow-filled weekend and then some.

This grey hoodie has the coolest, comfiest webbed thumbhole sleeve extensions that fit perfectly into their windproof gloves.  I somehow forgot a scarf one morning on the slopes (I know, HOW?!) and I was able to pull up the hood and wear it under my hat and helmut, tightening the drawstrings which brought the mock neck comfortably up over the lower portion of my face.  In the brutal cold of that morning, it absolutely saved me!

This vegan leather vest was such a perfect multi-tasker on the trip as well.  It’s fleece-lined so served as an amazing layer during the day on the slopes (see it in action on instagram here), and then fit right in with jeans and over-the-knee boots for dinner and drinks that night.

Te. This vest. After wearing the hoodie and leather vest on day one, I didn’t think it could get better. Yet another multi-tasker, this puffer vest might’ve just been my favorite piece of the bunch—which is really saying something. The chevron design makes for a slimmer take on the traditional puffer vest, featuring mesh insets between each panel. It provided the most wonderful extra layer of warmth under my parka (essential for how brutally cold it was!) while maintaining a level of breathability that kept me from turning into a sweaty mess while skiing.

Per the images above, you can see that the puffer vest also looks terrific off the slopes with jeans and a t-shirt.  One of the best features of this beauty is the fact that it comes with a tiny little case and the entire vest can be packed down into basically one cubic centimeter.  Ok, that’s a slight exaggeration, but for someone committed to a carryon, this packability feature alone made the vest an epic win.

Speaking of commitment to a carry on, apparently I was so committed to packing lightly, that I managed to completely forget to pack my snow boots.  Lucky for me it only snowed about ten inches while I was in Breckenridge so it was no big deal…

Yikes.

My Stuart Weitzman Lowland over-the-knee boots are always travel favorites during the winter because they take up so little space in my luggage, so these were my go-to aprés ski footwear.  Otherwise, sans snow boots, I luckily happened to bring these Adidas Superstar sneakers which have rubber toes that kept any wet snow at bay.

Last but not least, I really upped my ski jacket game with this Adidas by Stella McCartney quilted bomber jacket.  I’m obsessed with basically everything about the coat—the trendy cropped style, the perfect reflective grey hue, the oversized drawstring stand collar that served as the ultimate wind/snow shield, the jacket’s supreme functionality with thumbholes and amazing internal harness, and the warmth warmth warmth!  My ski pants are high-waisted which was covered perfectly by the jacket’s banded elastic waist, making the cropped coat more than able to keep out snow and cold.

Even the quality of their basic compression leggings really knocked my socks off—serving as an amazing layer underneath my ski pants (just wait ’til you see the rest of their leggings below!).  I’ve got my eye on their bodysuits too (how sick is this one?!) for my next trip which I think would make for the comfiest base layer.
